I knew it was going to be amazing, but I never expected it to impact me the way it did. As I started volunteering as an alumna, I came to understand our ritual intellectually. “I went through recruitment as a freshman because it was what I was supposed to do. My mom and sister had both joined sororities in college, so it seemed like a family tradition that I wanted to be part of. Having not much of an idea what I was getting into or who I was getting into it with, I ran down the stairs of my school’s postcard academic building into the arms of Tri Sigma. To have that many women be so excited to have me join their sisterhood, I was simply swept off my feet. That’s been my experience with Tri Sigma ever since; I have been swept off of my feet constantly.

When sisters gather in support of a Tri Sigma, it is always a powerful experience. Rose Trahan Cipriano, a Tri Sigma alumna and her family were victims of a violent attack. On Friday, June 8th, Tri Sigma women from a number of cities joined more than 2,000 other community members to participate in the Cipriano 5K in Farmington/Farmington Hills, Michigan.
“We felt the bonds of sisterhood so strongly. Wisdom, faith, hope power and love, the values of Tri-Sigma, were so evident. Alpha Phi sisters of Rose reunited from many states. Many had not been in contact for over 30 years. Over 2100 people walked in the event that was planned for 500, and the community support for the family was amazing. Sisters shared an evening of reminiscing and writing notes of support to Rose and her family,” Arlene Reid Ball said after the event.

We’re hearing how women were changed by the Labyrinth, and we are so amazed at how the experience changed perceptions. Self perceptions, perceptions of the world and our culture, and perceptions of the National Sorority were impacted for the better. Prior to starting the Labyrinth Leadership Experience, the participants gathered together virtually through a Facebook group! One of the first comments made on that group related to the feeling amongst the participants that they were pioneers. Our next story from the Labyrinth Leadership Experience comes from Cammie Coker, Epsilon Zeta – Southern Arkansas. Cammie explains the “Hope Challenge”, a concept introduced to the group and the adventure that followed. “The value that truly made an impact on me during this experience was Hope. We all were divided up into groups, given $50 and told to go find hope in Washington, D.C. The group that I was a part of decided to pay it forward.” Click in to read more!

We’re so amazed by the experiences of the Labyrinth graduates, it simply does not do the journey justice to attempt to articulate what these women observed and offered to each other during the five day journey. Our leadership programs are powerful. They are focused on developing women who will change the world. And these women will now walk through the world having shared something singular and unique. We’re hoping to tell their stories this summer, and we’re pleased to have the first blog entry less than 24 hours after the group departed.
